Objective:
Obtain contract work that will lead to new experiences, new contacts, new research, and possibly lead to starting my own company, or forming a partnership to create a company. I prefer working with databases, web development (AJAX, Java Servlets, JSPs), and Java.
Functional Summary:
I am capable of computer programming in many different languages. I am extremely confident that I may learn any language necessary to complete whatever task necessary. I am also comfortable in a team environment with excellent communication skills as well as customer skills.
Employment:
TransUnion Jan 2005 - Current
I began working for FloodSource in Euless, TX developing flood information systems. My first complete project, from design phase to production, was Veriflood. The site is a web service for online sales of flood determinations. The web itself is built using Apache Tomcat, Eclipse, and Jakarta Struts. I also developed a marketing tool using Python for contacting flood consumers.
Recently, we were aquired by TransUnion and moved down to Austin, TX. We have several large initiatives in place, my favorite of which is the rebuild of our flagship program Hard Rain. It is our manual flood processing system, and will be rebuilt from start to finish. I am one of three developers currently implementing the system. We have chosen to use the Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP) as our framework for development. We are also making very heavy use of the plug-in architecture, which is a part of the RCP. It is a very exciting technology, somewhat on the bleeding edge, but sturdy enough to support our needs.
Education:
University of Texas at Arlington 2000 - 2004
BS in Software Engineering, Summa Cum Laude
Graduated with summa cum laude title with a 3.8 GPA. Senior Design team leader for a successful project. I was the only SE major that semester to graduate with summe cum laude title. My degree plan was tailored for focus in languages, databases, and project management.
Personal Projects :
BlackBook
The BlackBook project is an event notification system. In simple terms, it is a reminder that sits on your desktop and reminds you of events like birthdays. I developed it to keep me out of trouble with friends' birthdays and girlfriends' important dates.
Smart Student Software
Smart Student Software was a business initiative I tried to start when I was 15. It consisted of a Visual C++ 6.0 dialog application that allowed for creation of multiple choice test, flash cards, a class scheduler (identifying choice combinations of class sections), and a grade tracking program. I also developed a simple html website, and then used MS FrontPage's form submission scripts for comment submission. The failure of this initiative was due to the fact that I forgot students don't have money.
ZachCalvert.com
You're looking at a web site that was originally based on simple html pages. I then began using MS FrontPage for editing and form submission, only to realize that MS FontPage created pages that were not maintainable, at least not in the way I had made use of it. Now I have revamped it using a technology I am much more comfortable with, Java servlets with Tomcat as the servlet container.
